History

Explore some of these prisoners and others prisoners that were interned here. Along with this you can uncover parts of the gaol that can be viewed during your visit.

Hangings

Public hangings took place at the front of the gaol over gallows erected above the front door. As time passed a railing was erected with the responsibility of preventing people gathering and causing confusion when a hanging was in process.

Museum

The museum houses a collection of both the social and political history of the gaol. It deals with all of the above information along with other important periods and individuals in Irish history. Other areas that are explored within the museum include the story of Anne Devlin, housekeeper to Robert Emmet (1803), the Young Ireland Rebellion (1848), The Fenians (1867), The Invincibles (1882), the Restoration of the Gaol (1960) and the thousands of social prisoners that were in interned there throughout it’s years.
