Hangings
Public hangings took
place at the front of the gaol over gallows
erected above the front door. As time passed
a railing was erected with the
responsibility of preventing people
gathering and causing confusion when a
hanging was in process.

Museum
The museum houses a
collection of both the social and political
history of the gaol. It deals with all of
the above information along with other
important periods and individuals in Irish
history. Other areas that are explored
within the museum include the story of Anne
Devlin, housekeeper to Robert Emmet (1803),
the Young Ireland Rebellion (1848), The
Fenians (1867), The Invincibles (1882), the
Restoration of the Gaol (1960) and the
thousands of social prisoners that were in
interned there throughout it’s years.
